2024 50-Year Member Recognition
recipient John (Jack) C. Duke Jr. joined
ASNT in 1974 while pursuing his PhD at
Johns Hopkins University. He served on
the faculty of Virginia Tech’s Engineering
Science and Mechanics Department
for 38 years. In 1982, Duke and five
senior members of the ASME Pressure
Vessels and Piping Division founded the
ASME NDE Engineering Subdivision,
while he was also advancing through
the chairs of the ASNT Education and
Qualification Council. In 1985, he became
the inaugural chair of the ASME NDE
Engineering Division and served on
the ASNT Board of Directors. Duke is a
Fellow of both ASNT and ASME and a
member of the Order of the Engineer.
He cofounded the National Academy
of Sciences Transportation Research
Board AKT40 Structure Maintenance
Subcommittee, serving as its sole chair
until its sunset in 2023 after completing
its objectives.
In 2020, Duke received the Robert C.
McMaster Gold Medal Award and the
Mentoring Award from ASNT. He also
received the William F. Via Jr. Bridge NDT
Lifetime Service Recognition and the
Robert E. Green Jr. Research Recognition
for Sustained Excellence Award in 2018.
He is a senior subject matter expert
in NDE engineering, consulting as an
external member of the NASA NESC
NDE Technical Discipline Team. He is
also a professor emeritus at Virginia
Tech, where he is developing an online
post-baccalaureate course for NDE
engineering to help achieve and sustain
structural integrity.
ANTHONY FANTINI
2024 50-Year Member Recognition
recipient Anthony Fantini began his
welding career in 1969 during his soph-
omore year of high school at the County
Vocational Institute, where his class won a
James F. Lincoln Arc Welding Award for
their project work. In 1971, he became
an ASME Section IX certified welder at
the Materials Engineering Laboratory for
a company specializing in the design,
construction, inspection, and renova-
tion of fossil and nuclear power stations
worldwide.
Fantini worked for EBASCO
Services Inc. for 17 years, earning multiple
Level III certifications, as well as certifica-
tions from the American Welding Society
and the American Petroleum Institute.
Over the next 25 years, he worked for a
utility, including seven years working in
the Middle East’s “oil patch” with Aramco
and three years in China as the welding
QC project manager for the ASME
mechanical modular AP1000, a two-unit
nuclear new-build project that was an
early part of the “Nuclear Renaissance.”
He retired in March 2024 and has been a
member of ASNT since 1974.
KURT GOTTSCHALK
2024 50-Year Member Recognition
recipient Kurt Gottschalk has been
in the NDT industry since he was 22,
when he began working for his fami-
ly’s imaging production company,
Warren NDT in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Alongside his father, Warren, and now
with his son Evan, Kurt has helped shape
the company to firmly support the NDT
community and manufacture X-ray
imaging products of the highest quality
and craftsmanship.
Under Gottschalk’s leadership, Warren
NDT has thrived, with a dedicated and
loyal staff that has been with him for
decades. Now in its 78th year of opera-
tion, the company has stayed on course
while weathering economic storms under
Gottschalk’s valued leadership.

recipient Tim Flaherty is an ASNT
Fellow and a founding member and
past chair of the Old Dominion Section.
Flaherty is Sales Manager for Maryland-
based DETEK, a nondestructive testing
equipment and supplies company he
joined in 1973, and is responsible for their
technical support, field sales, and service.
