Tomography to Study the Density,
Packing, and Crushing of Materials,”
presented by Dr. Michelle Espy, a
scientist at the Los Alamos National
Laboratory in Los Alamos, New Mexico,
explores X-ray computed tomography
(CT) for nondestructive material evalu-
ation. While CT scans provide detailed
imaging, extracting density data is
complex due to energy-dependent
attenuation and image scatter. Espy
presents methods to improve density
measurements to within 1% and
discusses CT’s limitations. CT also
reveals material behavior, such as
granular crushing and packing. Its
effectiveness depends on data quality,
segmentation, and post-processing.
For nine years, Espy has focused on
X-ray, neutron, and proton imaging
for material characterization, partic-
ularly micro-CT for studying material
packing and crushing. She has also
used high-energy CT on unconventional
specimens like dinosaur fossils. Her
