BEYOND THE NAKED EYE
Master Sgt. Jason Barker, 931st Maintenance Squadron nondestructive inspection (NDI)
section chief, holds a vial of magnetic particle inspection liquid under a black light at
McConnell Air Force Base in Kansas. US Air Force NDI specialists play a role in ensuring
the safety of equipment, ultimately protecting the lives of pilots and crew members.
Some of the nondestructive testing methods used include X-ray, ultrasonic testing, eddy
current testing, magnetic particle testing, and liquid penetrant inspections, all aimed at
detecting equipment cracks and structural weaknesses.
