GRASSROOTS ADVOCACY STARTS WITH YOU
BY GARRA LIMING
In my last article, I shared the success of ASNT’s first-
ever Hill Day, where more than 40 members met with
Congressional offices in March to raise awareness about
nondestructive testing (NDT). It was a major milestone for
ASNT—but just as important as what happened on the Hill is
what happens next.
That’s why I’m excited to share that ASNT is getting ready to launch a grassroots
advocacy plan designed to help members advocate for NDT in their own communi-
ties. Whether you attended Hill Day or are just learning about our advocacy efforts,
there’s a role for everyone to play. And we’re starting small—with a simple survey to
ASNT members to help shape what comes next.
WHAT IS THE
GRASSROOTS PLAN?
ASNT’s grassroots advocacy plan is
based on a simple but powerful idea:
when members engage locally, our entire
profession grows stronger. The initiative,
called the ASNT Advocate program, will
focus on two key areas:
Ñ Education outreach. We’re looking
to connect with schools, training
programs, and community events
where we can introduce more
people to the world of NDT. This
includes high schools, community
colleges, technical centers, job fairs,
and career days—anywhere there’s
an opportunity to raise awareness
and spark interest. If you know of a
local opportunity or have relation-
ships with educators or workforce
programs, we’d love your help in
opening doors and spreading the
word.
Ñ State and local advocacy. We’re
also preparing resources and
training to help members engage
with policymakers in their own
communities. Whether it’s visiting a
legislator’s district office, attending
a public hearing, or supporting a
relevant policy initiative, every action
helps elevate the visibility of NDT.
HELP US SHAPE
THE PLAN
Our first step is reaching out to all
members through a short survey. We
want to better understand which advo-
cacy topics matter most to you, which
schools or programs you’re aware
of, and how you might want to get
involved—even in small ways. Your input
will help us build a grassroots effort that
reflects the passion and expertise of our
membership.
We’ll also use survey responses to
update our national database of NDT
programs and identify new outreach
opportunities, especially with schools and
training programs that could benefit from
adding or expanding NDT coursework.
BUILDING ON WHAT
WE ALREADY HAVE
Our members are already leading the
way. Members like Emilie Peloquin and
Eddie Pompa (who you’ve probably seen
on social media or in the pages of this
magazine), along with many others, are
actively advocating for the industry. Our
goal is to support and amplify efforts
like theirs while making it easy for more
members to join in at their own pace and
in ways that match their interests.
We’re not trying to do everything at
once. This will be a slow build—a grass-
roots effort in every sense of the word.
But by starting now, we can make steady,
meaningful progress.
WHAT’S COMING NEXT
Once we gather input from the survey,
we’ll start building the next phase of the
plan, including:
Ñ Creating a network of ASNT
Advocates who want to be involved
in outreach and advocacy efforts.
Ñ Offering webinars and training
sessions to guide members through
education outreach, policymaker
engagement, and ASNT Advocate
certification.
Ñ Developing toolkits with sample
outreach materials, talking points,
and tips for effective advocacy.
Ñ Launching targeted campaigns
around key legislative or regulatory
opportunities.
WHY IT MATTERS
We learned during Hill Day that too many
people don’t know who we are or what
we do. But when ASNT members show
up and speak up—whether in Washington
or at a local event—it changes the conver-
sation. You are the best advocate for our
industry. You know the value of NDT, the
challenges we face, and the opportuni-
ties that exist if more people understood
and supported this field.
LET’S GROW THIS
TOGETHER
If you’re ready to get involved, watch
for the upcoming survey in your email
inbox and keep an eye out for updates
