24 MACHINE VISION—BASED TOOLS FOR
AUTOMOTIVE SERVICE AND REPAIR
DANIEL LAU
Visual inspections by mechanics may miss problems and lack
precision. Machine-vision systems provide quantitative data for
accurate diagnostics and repairs.
34 ROBOTIC CRAWLERS FOR VISUAL TESTING
RON KESSLER
Modern robotic crawlers enhance inspection safety, reduce data
collection time, improve data quality, and optimize costs by
minimizing confined space entries.
40 RVI FOR INTERNAL HEALTH MONITORING
OF INDUSTRIAL GAS TURBINES
PAUL THOMPSON
Using remote visual inspection (RVI) to detect issues in industrial
gas turbines can prevent costly failures and downtime by
accurately measuring anomalies with 3D data.
49 ROBOTIC VISUAL INSPECTION IN
CONFINED SPACES
EKKEHARD ZWICKER, BRANDON DEBOER, MARKUS
WEISSMANN, AND ANTOINE CHEVALEYRE
Robotic visual inspection presents a promising solution to
the challenges posed by confined space inspection, offering
enhanced efficiency, accuracy, and safety.
56 VISUAL TESTING METHOD PERSONNEL
QUALIFICATION AND CERTIFICATION:
AN OVERVIEW
MIKE ALLGAIER
For most nondestructive testing personnel who perform visual
testing, the education, experience, training, and exams required
for their qualification and certification vary across different codes,
standards, and guidelines.

UNLOCKING THE
POSSIBILITIES OF NDE 4.0
ASNT ADVOCACY
It’s a concern heard across the
world: What happens to my job
if a computer can do it? While
this worry is a reality in many
professions, the role of ML and
AI in NDE 4.0 is not to replace
practitioners, but to help them
do their jobs better. This article
by Suhaib Zafar, published in
the ASNT Column in Quality
Magazine, aims to dispel
misconceptions about AI/ML in
NDE.
