SCOPE | AWARDS&HONORS DAVID BAJULA 2021 Philip D. Johnson Honorary Member Recognition recipient David Bajula has 40 years of broad experience in NDT inspection services, management, leadership, operations, and business development. Bajula worked for General Electric and Combustion Engineering/ ABB and has been employed by Acuren for the past 22 years, currently serving as its general manager of advanced NDT services. Bajula holds ACCP and ASNT NDT Level IIIs in UT, RT, MT, PT, VT, ET, LT, AE, IR, and ML. He has maintained his AWS CWI for over 25 years and holds API-510, QUTE, QUPA, and QUPASE certifications. Leading by example, Bajula encourages everyone to embrace performance demonstration initiatives and to help raise the bar for personnel qualifications and certifications. As a Past President of ASNT, he is passionate about the unique business of NDT and is continually striving to serve ASNT’s members and stakeholders, and to help to create a safer world. He is an ASNT Fellow (class of 2005) and a Mentoring Award recipient (2016). Bajula works to expand opportunities for NDT technicians in the Society and the work- force at large. He has a strong commit- ment to ASNT through committee work. He serves as vice chair of the Certification Management Committee, chair of the ISO TAG TC-135 group, and Regional Director for Region 10 (Texas). RON BOTSKO 2021 50-Year Member Recognition recipient Ron Botsko’s NDT career began in 1959 as a research engineer at Youngstown Sheet and Tube Co. in Ohio before moving west to work at the Los Angeles Airport. Throughout his career, Botsko has held many positions, include R&D engineer, NDT manager, and director of NDT research. He became a member of ASNT in 1963 and held ASNT NDT Level III certifications in UT and ET. In 1971 he founded NDT Instruments Inc. in Huntington Beach, California, which was sold to DuPont in 1988. In 1992, he moved to Washington State and continued to support DuPont, and later, the company that bought NDT Systems from DuPont. Botsko is an ASNT Fellow (class of 1974) and received the Robert C. McMaster Gold Medal award in 1983 and the ASNT Achievement Award in 1969. Along with Robert McMaster, he co-authored three chapters on microwave NDT for the 1986 edition of the Electromagnetic Testing Handbook, as well as co-authored chap- ters in three other ASNT Handbooks on thermal/infrared, acoustical holography, and microwave NDT. Since 2004, Botsko has been semi-retired but continues to stay active in NDT and ASNT. He lives in Texas and is a member of the North Texas Section. KENNETH FIZER 2021 50-Year Member Recognition recipient Kenneth Fizer’s NDT involve- ment began in the 1960s working at Naval Aviation Depot in Norfolk, Virginia, during college, assisting in such NDT activities as developing film for blade X-ray inspection and training in their ultrasonic unit. After graduating from Old Dominion University as a chem- istry major, Fizer worked in the Naval Aviation Depot’s lab as a chemist. In 1967, he became a metallurgist and supported NDT efforts starting in 1970. From the late 1970s until his retirement, his facility was the primary depot for maintaining the Grumann A-6 Intruder and F-14 Tomcat aircrafts. Fizer began participating in DoD NDT conferences (1971) and was elected to the Steering Committee in 1977 and served as chair for the 30th DoD conference. He retired from DoD in 1993, became a certi- fied Nadcap NDT auditor in 1995, and continued auditing for 23 years. Fizer originally joined ASNT in 1970. He maintained ASNT NDT Level III certi- fications in MT, PT, ET, UT, and RT until 2016, and is a member of the Hampton Roads Section. Fizer has retired to the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia with his “almost high school sweetheart” and enjoys hunting and fishing. ABOUT THE PHILIP D. JOHNSON HONORARY MEMBER RECOGNITION The Philip D. Johnson Honorary Member Award is the highest lifetime ASNT award bestowed upon a longtime member of the Society who is appreciated at the national level—and perhaps internationally—for many years (minimum 20) of meritorious service in the technology of nondestructive testing. ABOUT THE 50-YEAR MEMBER RECOGNITION The 50-Year Member Recognition formally recognizes individuals who have been members of the Society for 50 years or longer. ASNT is currently accepting nominations for the Lester/Mehl Honor Lecture, Research Recognition for Innovation, and Research Recognition for Sustained Excellence.
