UT INSPECTION OF SAND PIPELINE While people were sunbathing on the beach in Rotterdam, Maasvlakte (The Netherlands), Mark Wevers was inspecting the full-penetration welds of a sand pipe. A sand pipe is used to transport mined or dredged sand, which is used to replenish beaches. The inspection was done by manual ultrasonic testing (UT). The pipe was made of old and new sections and had some variations in wall thickness, which made it quite challenging. After all the welds had been accepted on the approximately one-mile-long sand pipe, the pipe was towed to Germany to make more beaches. It arrived in Germany in one piece, so job accomplished. A few days later, while the pipe was being relocated, it broke—not in a weld, but in the original material of an older section of the pipe. Ned NDT Services traveled to Germany to perform the same UT tests. The new welds and the welds near the broken section were all acceptable, ready for making beaches again.
